I have been lucky enough to meet and get to know the amazing Dawnie McElligott. We met at the Thumbs Up Golf Tourney when she bought me a drink to celebrate my hole-in-one. It was a good day!
I had heard about her previously, however, when I read in the paper about how she donated a portion of her liver to save the life of a local woman in desperate need of a transplant. This kind of selflessness is a rare thing to find in a person and I knew she was no ordinary woman.
It is a great pleasure to feature Dawnie in our monthly (even though I’ve been slacking) Women in Airdrie Killin’ It feature. Because not only is Dawnie a fantastic person, she is also an incredible entrepreneur and I have no doubt she is only just getting started.
Dawnie is the owner of At Dawn Wellness. It is a team consisting of 10 Registered Massage Therapists, an Osteopathic Manual Therapist, a Nucca Chiropractor, a Physiotherapist, and a Naturopathic Doctor in Airdrie, Alberta. They focus on providing a high-quality approach to your overall wellness. Their knowledge and expertise will help you with your rehabilitation and maintenance needs. In their words: “We truly believe being involved in our community is also a part of one’s wellness, so we stay connected by supporting and uplifting our community as much as possible.”
Naturally, I wanted to know what the best piece of advice Dawnie has ever received was, as there are always some gems uncovered with this question. Lucky for us, she has three pieces of advice:
a) Start your day with a positive mindset. The power of positive thinking goes a long way in achieving your goals.
b) Never stop learning. Knowledge is power
c) Know when to talk, and know when to listen.
She says she did not know she wanted to be an entrepreneur. “I started massaging when my daughters were young and I could be home with them and work around their schedule. I started growing and all I wanted was to help everyone I could. I had a hard time saying no. I then had a dream of opening up a Wellness Centre in Old Town, Airdrie. And so I became an Entrepreneur! If you haven’t had a chance to check this place out, you really should. It has a very comfortable atmosphere with the friendliest and most caring staff. You truly feel like you are being taken care of there!
Her favourite Airdrie businesses?
“There are so many amazing businesses in Airdrie. One of them would be Boulevard Home Inc. Danielle Doetzel was the brilliant mind behind how my Wellness Centre looks today. Airdrie Puppy Pals is another great business. Nikki and her team have made our dogs a home away from home. And lastly, The Hair Lounge Wendy opened up in 2008 and has been killing it ever since. All of these businesses have given back to the Airdrie Community through all the years of business being opened”.
Her favourite thing about Airdrie is the small-town feeling in a big city!
